Supporting high school education in Chiapas

Working with our small groups of artisans is one way to support their traditions and culture and provide a fair income for the incredible work they create by hand. At Fleece & Hide we have extended our community further to support the education of indigenous children in the state of Chiapas. Our chosen organisation works directly in San Andrés Larráinzar, where our weavers are based, and currently support over 250 children in this region with scholarships.

$5 from every sale goes to supporting indigenous children through high school

For every pair of boots sold we donated $5 to Escalera. A non-profit organisation based in Chiapas, Escalera provides scholarships for kids to ensure they’re able to complete their high school education. For ever 2 pairs of boots that we sell we can support a child's education for a full month.

Supporting change for indigenous children

The state of Chiapas is one of the poorest in Mexico and the indigenous communities in particular suffer from higher levels of poverty. Raising the level of education among these indigenous people gives them the opportunity to make informed decisions about their future and be agents of change within their community.

With the majority of families living below the poverty line many children are forced to drop out of high school in order to support their families, turning to farming of immigrating to the US in search of greater opportunities. The scholarship is provided at a critical stage as the children transition into high school and provides them with the resources they need in order to continue their education and later graduate.
